Nationals draft another power arm

The Nationals used their first pick in the 2012 amateur draft to select Lucas Giolito, a hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher, out of Harvard-Westlake High School in California.

Altogether, “You can never have enough pitching.”

Giolito’s fastball has been clocked at three digits, but he’s also recovering from an elbow strain, and therefore comes with some risk. In discussing the pick, Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo and his scouting and development team minimized the risk, while gushing about the young pitcher’s potential upside.

Congratulations to Lucas.

Here’s hoping the kid is healthy and signs quickly, and that he’s soon under the watchful eye of Nationals’ pitching coordinator, Spin Williams.
