Hey Gio, we’re smiling too

What a day for Gio Gonzalez.

On Opening Day, in his Nationals Park debut, Gonzales threw 7 innings of shutout ball, striking out seven and walking none while allowing only 2 hits by the Cincinnati Reds.

That was great, but maybe better was Gio’s single off Mat Latos in the bottom of the 5th.

Best of all? That smile. How can you not love that smile?

Thanks! It was a priceless moment and I shot a bunch of frames because I really wanted to capture it. And you know what? Every picture looks pretty much like this–with Gio beaming. :)

Is that the shot of him standing on first?

What I liked about his journey around the bases was how much he seemed to be enjoying it. Did you notice how much he chatted with the Reds players between pitches? It’s a shame he didn’t score; OTOH, he probably doesn’t know how to slide. :)

Yes, happy Gio is on first here. The whole episode was incredibly endearing, although truth be told, Gio had already won me over.

I know what you mean. After the way he pitched in the first, Darcy turned to me and said, “I like this guy.”
